Kyren Wilson got the better of Ali Carter in the Shanghai Masters final on Sunday as he clinched the title for the second time in his career. But the match was briefly disrupted after a fan's mobile phone rang twice while they were watching on in the auditorium. And the referee was forced to address the issue as he had a word with the spectator.
Wilson, who won his first Shanghai Masters in 2015, overcame a string of elite opponents on his way to the final as he edged out Jiahui Si 6-5 in his opening match before overcoming Ronnie O'Sullivan 6-3. The 33-year-old then defeated current world champion Zhao Xintong 10-5 in the semi-finals to set up a showdown with Carter. The showpiece match proved to be a tense affair, with the lead changing hands in the early stages. But after Carter had fought back from 9-7 down to level the match at 9-9, Wilson kicked on to win the final two frames and clinch the win.
With Wilson 8-7 ahead and aiming to build a lead in the 16th frame, he got down to pot a green. But he returned to an upright position after he heard the phone ring.
The 2024 world champion then attempted to play the shot again, but was disrupted by the same phone for a second time. And TNT Sports duo David Hendon and Dominic Dale assessed the incident from the commentary box.
"A mobile phone went off there Dave," exclaimed Dale. And Hendon replied: "It was a very loud one. It is a big arena - it only takes one person."
After the phone sounded for a second time, Hendon then added: "It is going off again. That person is easy to contact, the volume they have got their phone up to. Referee just having a word. They say these things come in threes, let's hope not."
Wilson picked up £210,000 for winning the event. And after his victory, he explained: "It was a huge kick in the teeth going out in the first round of the World Championship [in April].
"I don't have that world title tag any more. But I've carried on in the same form. It is important to kick off the season in good fashion.
"This sets me up nicely for what is to come. I've had to wait a long time to get going again in professional competition, but this was definitely worth the wait.
"This is the biggest Chinese event we have and, with the snooker market growing and growing, it is important to try and land these titles."
