A "realistic" apocalyptic movie has been added to streaming services. Originally released in 2009, it has garnered amazing reviews and fans have hailed it as "beautiful" and "sad" at the same time. Apocalypse movies have been a popular genre, often going alongside sci-fi, for many decades now. Some of the most iconic ones include Armageddon, 2012 and 28 Days Later. However, there is one that was released almost 20 years ago that fans have laid the praise on.
The Road, released in 2009, has strong reviews. It has just been added to Amazon Prime Video for UK subscribers, so movie fans have a chance to discover this one if they haven't already. The movie is based on a hit book of the same name, and it tells the story of a father and son navigating a brutal new world they find themselves in after an unspecified natural disaster. Unlike other movies in the disaster film genre, we don't actually know what led to the world being like this.
Instead, the film follows the father and son as they navigate a world that has fallen to pieces, where food is in short supply and groups of people have banded together in a lawless land.
The Road tells the story of a man who fights to protect his son from a group of dangerous cannibals in a world left unrecognisable after some kind of massive disaster. The story progresses as the two head south, hoping to find more hospitable conditions to live in.
While some movie fans were left frustrated at the lack of answers as to what caused the world to become like this, others were dumbfounded by the story of a father trying to protect his child in impossible conditions. One reviewer took to Reddit to call the film the most realistic of its kind.
The Reddit user posted: "A more realistic approach to the post-apocalypse, and gave me a better idea of what an event could look like in the United States. Also had quite a few depressing and disturbing scenes."
One person replied: "Something about the complete hopelessness of it was horrifyingly realistic. I've never rewatched it, don't plan to."
Another shared: "Very realistic. I would like to see an early post-apocalypse film made with the same vision as this. In the movie and book he'd refer to the early days of the apocalypse in a very cryptic and eerie way, it evoked a certain emotion. Bloodcults. All the animals were hunted, all the plants died."
On Rotten Tomatoes, one person wrote: "The Road is as beautiful as it is sad. I believe it is a movie you should at least see once."
Another said: "How did I miss this movie? Finally streamed it last night and I was glued. The cinematography and the flow of the movie was fantastic! I highly recommend it if you are looking for a gripping dystopian movie."
