I love eating out, but it has become increasingly more expensive over the past few years and can really put a strain on your bank card if you go out as a family. But if you are looking at lowering the cost while still enjoying food from your favourite restautrant, many now offer supermarket ranges.
With that in mind, I tried the Las Iguanas products now available at Iceland. For full disclosure, I have never been to a Las Iguanas, and I can say this experience hasn't made me want to rush out to book a table with them. Las Iguanas promises delicious South American dishes in a casual dining setting, but do their frozen versions offer the same?
The only way to find out was to throw my family a little Mexican-inspired feast with the range. Here are the products I tried from the range:
- Las Iguanas 12 Hot Honey Halloumi Bites 216g - £3.50 (in the 3 for £10 deal)
- Las Iguanas 10 Fajita Chicken Taco Bites 350g - £3.50 (in the 3 for £10 deal)
- Las Iguanas Nacho Cheese Chicken Bites 500 g - £3.50 (in the 3 for £10 deal)
- Las Iguanas Honey Peri Peri Wings 600g - £4 (in the 3 for £10 deal)
- Las Iguanas BBQ Pork Enchilada 480g - £4.50 (in the 3 for £10 deal)
- Las Iguanas Cheesy Garlic Chicken Enchilada 480g - £4.50 (in the 3 for £10 deal)
You can see the full range by visiting the Iceland website here.
The verdict
Most of the items have a couple of different ways you can cook and heat them up. I opted for the air fryer where I could, as I prefer it for frozen items and think it adds extra crispiness.
The feast looked good and I would say the best item was the BBQ Pork Enchilada, although it may be a little sweet for some. But I thought the sauce was moreish and the pork was good quality and lovely and tender.
I could easily see myself devouring a whole one for a great midweek meal without all the effort of making one from scratch.
While I liked the Hot Honey Halloumi Bites, they needed a bit more heat in the honey to feel the kick, and you should eat these straight away otherwise they become a bit rubbery - but that is halloumi for you.
Unfortunately, that is where the recommendations from the products I tried end. Personally, I found the Fajita Chicken Taco Bites bland for what I know of South American flavours.
I also didn't really enjoy the Nacho Cheese Chicken Bites. These felt a bit to gimicky for me, the chicken was bland, the crumb coating needed more seasoning and I missed where they put the cheese completely.
The Honey Peri Peri Wings themselves were fine, but the sauce you are told to add once cooked is way too tangy to enjoy, the blanace of sweet, sour and heat is not enjoyable. Iceland do their own chicken wings, which I think are nicer.
Then the Cheesy Garlic Chicken Enchilada just plain confused me. It didn't feel authentic, the chicken was a little dry, and it was instantly forgettable.
The whole meal actually put me off ever booking a table at Las Iguanas. Although perhaps much of it could have been improved with some freshly made sides, like guacamole, sour cream and salad.
And perhaps I have not tried the best of the range, they also have some nacho toppers, individual burritos, burrito bowls, mac and cheese and churros.
Many are included in Iceland's three for £10 deal, so you can try them out for yourself.
