Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard expects to form an immediate partnership with Viktor Gyokeres, in an exciting promise to Mikel Arteta and Gunners fans. Odegaard's form dipped last season, in part due to the lack of a recognised centre-forward ahead of him.
Arteta has attempted to solve that issue with the blockbuster £63.5million addition of Gyokeres. Arsenal are hoping that the 27-year-old can replicate his scoring form from former club Sporting, where he struck 97 times in 102 appearances. That may rely on him being supplied by Odegaard and Co. The Norway international expects to have a 'naturally' good relationship with the Swede due to the similar languages.
Odegaard said during Arsenal's pre-season tour of Asia: "With the language and all that, it has been easier for me to help him. We can speak our own language. Scandinavians always make good connections. So in that way it has been very natural."
Gyokeres has taken on the pressure of wearing the club's iconic No. 14 shirt, previously worn by Thierry Henry, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Theo Walcott. He hopes to make his own history in the shirt.
"It's not really my intention to be compared with what he's achieved in his career," said the former Brighton and Coventry star. "Especially here. I just want to do my own thing and show my qualities. Of course he was an amazing player, but different from me. I just want to try to do my own thing.
"Of course I know about the history. But to be honest there weren't so many numbers available. There weren't too many to pick from. But of course that one was available. So when I knew that it was an easy choice to take it."
Arteta is delighted with his new signing and hopes that he can form a strong bond with those around him, particularly Odegaard. The Spaniard believes Gyokeres has the mentality to cope with the pressure of following in Henry's footsteps.
"I use the word conviction and that's the first thing that I noticed when I spoke to him," the Arsenal boss said. "Someone very determined, someone that was already really attached to the club the way he was talking about the club, the history and in this case Thierry and what the shirt represented. He straight away felt it. And when you feel it, go for it."
