Actor Rupert Everett has volunteered to work at his local pub in a bid to save it from closure. The 66-year-old Shakespeare In Love actor is one of 30 hopeful volunteers at The Swan in Enford after the 350-year-old Wiltshire establishment was threatened with closure.
The Swan closed down for seven months last year until a new licensee re-opened it. However, it shut down again this summer when they left. And now, the pub is being kept afloat thanks to a group of volunteers helping the community-owned pub. Rupert is one of the many people getting behind the bar to help.
Speaking on Good Morning Britain, Rupert revealed: "I’m part of a big rota. Our pub closed down a few months ago, and it’s had a chequered existence for the last 20 years, like many pubs, and it’s in a rural village, and I think the people in the village realised that without it, there’s no possibility of communication, and so the villagers wanted to keep the pub going."

He added: "Everybody decided to take part in rotas in various roles, and I have done a few stints pulling pints.
"I was working on Saturday, but I’m off to work now, so I’m not going to be back for a bit. But it’s a great thing. Without a pub in a village, if you’re in the countryside and you’re eight miles from the nearest town, it’s sad, and it’s such a difficult time for pubs in general."
Rupert explained: "I should say where it is. Anyone on the A345 going past Enford, go to The Swan for a drink." When asked about his bartending skills, he told the hosts: "I’m doing pretty well so far."
Camra Salisbury and South Wiltshire representative, Steve Stringer, recently spoke to The Times and revealed how the actor started volunteering.
"When it came about that the pub closed and we were looking for volunteers, he said, 'Well, I want to do that as well'," he said.
"He definitely wants to be part of it because it’s the heart of the village. We’ve got no other facilities in the village. There’s the pub and nothing else."
Meanwhile, Rupert and Hayley Atwell recently joined the cast for the much-anticipated second series of Rivals, playing lead character Rupert Campbell Black’s former showjumping boss and his bitter ex-wife - who are now married to each other.
Hayley, best known for her roles in the Marvel and Mission Impossible films, will be playing Helen Gordon, mother of Rupert’s two children, Marcus and Tabitha - who will also appear this time around.
Rupert, who starred alongside Julia Roberts in My Best Friend’s Wedding, takes on the role of her husband Malise Gordon, Campbell Black’s former show-jumping coach and mentor
