World Stroke Day 2025: Stroke cases are rapidly increasing in the country. According to the Indian Stroke Association, approximately 1.8 million people in India suffer a stroke every year, with a growing number of young people suffering from it. Experts say that the risk of this disease can be significantly reduced by taking timely precautions and adopting a healthy lifestyle.
Dr. Madhukar Bhardwaj, Director and HOD of the Department of Neurology at Aakash Healthcare, explains that a stroke occurs when the supply of blood and oxygen to the brain is interrupted. This blockage can occur due to either a blood clot or a ruptured brain vein. In such a situation, brain cells begin to die within minutes, posing a serious threat to the patient's life.
5 Risk Factors for Stroke
High Blood Pressure
According to doctors, high blood pressure is the primary cause in 60% of stroke patients. Persistently high blood pressure weakens the brain's nerves, increasing the risk of blood vessel rupture. Therefore, get your blood pressure checked regularly and take your medication on time.
Diabetes
High blood sugar increases the risk of inflammation and blockage in the veins. Dr. Kumar says that people with diabetes have twice the risk of stroke compared to the general population. It is crucial to keep sugar levels under control.
Smoking and Alcohol
Tobacco and smoking constrict blood vessels and increase the risk of blood clots. Experts estimate that smoking increases the risk of stroke by 50%. Excessive alcohol consumption also increases the risk of brain hemorrhage.
Obesity and Lack of Physical Activity
Excess weight, poor diet, and low physical activity increase pressure on the heart and blood vessels. This can lead to high blood pressure and cholesterol, which can cause a stroke. Therefore, ensure you exercise for at least 30 minutes daily.
High Cholesterol
Increased levels of bad cholesterol (LDL) in the blood can cause plaque to build up in the arteries, which can block blood flow. Doctors advise avoiding fast food, fried foods, and trans fats.
