The National Crime Records Bureau ( NCRB) report 2023 has revealed a rise of 21.2% in crime by foreign nationals, compared to the previous year. "A total of 2,546 cases were registered in 2023 on crime by foreign nationals compared to 2,100 cases in the year 2022, showing an increase of 21.2%. Crime head-wise cases revealed that 48.5% of the cases registered were under Foreigners Act & Registration of Foreigners Act (1,234 cases), followed by 17.7% of cases under the Passport Act (451 cases), the report released on Tuesday stated.
With 1,050 cases, West Bengal reported the highest number, followed by Tripura (277) and Maharashtra (272) and Tamil Nadu (167). Among the Union territories, Delhi (51), followed by Jammu and Kashmir (49) reported most cases, according to the report. A total of 2,290 cases were reported across India among states and UTs.
Under the offences against state, a total of 4,873 cases were registered in 2023 compared to 5,610 cases in 2022, showing a decline of 13.1%. "Out of 4,873 cases, 81.9% of cases were registered under The Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act (3,989 cases), followed by 750 (15.4%) cases under The Unlawful Activities Prevention Act," the report stated.
Uttar Pradesh (1,737), followed by Tamil Nadu (832) and Assam (273) registered the highest number of cases under UAPA. Among the UTs, Jammu and Kashmir reported 192 cases, followed by Delhi (12) in 2023.
Cyber-crime reported a phenomenal rise of 31.2% with a total of 86,420 cases being registered compared to 65,893 cases registered in 2022. "Crime rate under this category increased from 4.8 in 2022 to 6.2 in 2023. During 2023, 68.9% of cyber-crime cases registered were for the motive of fraud (59,526 out of 86,420 cases), followed by sexual exploitation with 4.9% (4,199 cases) and extortion with 3.8% (3,326 cases)," the report stated.
For human trafficking offences, the NCRB reported a total of 2,183 cases in 2023 compared to 2,250 cases in 2022, showing a decline of 3%.
